Jurmala – the Latvian beach
Jurmala is not just a city by the beach – it is the biggest resort in the Baltic States.. It is very close to the capital Riga and the airport. 33km white sand beach (there are no private beaches) and large pine forests. Simply beautiful!
Jurmala is divided in 13 small areas – Priedaine, Lielupe, Bulduri, Dzintari, Majori, Dubulti, Jaundubulti, Pumpuri, Melluzi, Asari, Vaivari, Sloka, Kemeri. There is a train that goes from Riga and stops at all these areas. You can get the schedule and prices here. For example, train ride from Riga to Bulduri costs only 1.20eur and last 25min. The easiest way is to drive a car (and you can get there real quickly -if you like speeding on the motorway), but you have to pay 2eur (from !st april until 30th September) when entering Jurmala with private transport (and on holidays/weekends there may be queues to by the pass).
This is Bulduri – my favourite beach and it is one of the busiest ones.. but it is just 5min walk from the train station. If you prefer a quiet beach – the beaches further away from Riga are less busy.. in some you may even feel like the only one at the beach. All the beaches are spacious – the best place to play beach volleyball of football
Jomas street has been famous for decades – it goes from Dzintari to Majori.. a street full of restaurants and suvenier shops. This pedestrian street starts from the Dzintari concert hall and leads to Majori where the Jurmala Information Centre is located.
Pinguin was my favourite ice cream place when I was a kid.. Although the place is old.. the ice cream still was delicious :)
I love sushi – on Jomas street there are 3 restaurants who offer great sushi (and the prices are cheap compared to most european countries!)
There is plenty to do in Jurmala.. there are two aqua parks – Livu and Nemo. this is a place for fun and relaxation in many spa hotels.. or just enjoy a romantic the sunset by the beach!
